Noth’s Thrall: BASTIAN

As part of “Masters of Eternal Night” the Thralltakers – a group of mind flayer bounty hunters – pursue the party and eventually attack them. In the original adventure, it was a trio of standard mind flayers – – Noth, Vour and Skwusch along with Bluntfel, the intellect devourer-bloodhound and a thrall bodyguard.  Here is one of the NPC bodyguards.

Indomitable (3/Day). Bastian can reroll a saving throw he fails. He must use the new roll.

Psionic Seal. Bastian has a psionic tattoo on his forearm that enhances his mind/body coordination, granting him +2 on all attack rolls.

Special Equipment: Mind Carapace Chain. Specifically crafted for Bastian, this armor makes him immune to the frightened condition and grants advantage on Wisdom, Intelligence and Charisma saving throws.

Special Equipment. Ring of Regeneration, 2x potion of giant size (drinks it at the start of combat, included in attacks), Tiamat’s Rebuke (a shield shaped as the holy symbol of Tiamat), heavy furs, and boots.

Special Equipment: Sword of the Slayer – Mortem. This mind flayer weapon acts as a +2 longsword of humanoid slaying. Each hit of this weapon also drains 1d4 Intelligence permanently on a failed DC 17 Intelligence saving throw – a natural 20 instantly kills the target as its brain atrophies. It also allows Bastian to cast charm person once per day that has a duration of 1 week. If a creature survives a critical hit it suffers a wound. For each wound it has the sword does an extra 4 (1d8) slashing damage against the target.

Survivor. Bastian regains 10 hit points at the start of his turn if he has at least 1 hit point but fewer hit points than half his hit point maximum.

ACTIONS
Multiattack. Bastian makes two weapon attacks.

Mortem. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 23 (3d8 + 10) slashing damage. Against humanoids, it scores a critical hit on a 17+ and does an extra 44 slashing damage. On a natural 20, the weapon does 77 damage against humanoids only. See Trait section for details.

Githyanki Oathbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target.
Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.

Tiamat’s Rebuke. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature.
Hit: 34 (6d4 + 7) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. When Tiamat’s Rebuke’s wielder suffers a critical hit the sounds a gong and a random effect occurs:

  1. All allies within 30 feet of the wielder heal for 1 HD of damage
  2. A terrain appropriate young chromatic dragon is summoned that serves for 1 minute.
  3. A fireball triggers at the location of the wielder that detonates per the spell (DC 15) but with an energy type that makes sense dragon type of the terrain – acid, cold, fire, lightning and poison (the wielder is immune to this effect)

REACTION
Tiamat’s Rebuke Block. Bastian adds 3 to his AC against one melee attack that would hit him. To do so, he must see the attacker and be wielding a shield. If the attack still hits Bastian, he gains damage resistance against that attack. He may then use shield bash against the triggering attacker.

DESCRIPTION
Bastian is reserved and haughty, absolutely convinced in the superiority of his illithid masters.
