MORE FUNGI FOR THE UNDERDARK

I am prepping for my next campaign – Out of the Abyss – and the adventure path clearly has a touch of whimsy with more than a passing resemblance to Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland.  They even say as much in the preface.  So I went back and read the two 1e adventures that are much more directly inspired (actually set in) wonderland – Dungeonland and The Land Behind the Magic Mirror.  I picked up some of the encounters in those adventures and decided to convert them for Out of the Abyss.  Since Out of the Abyss uses a lot of random tables these should be easy to insert.  Here are more fungi options.

MORE FUNGI

COMMON MUSHROOM: Any pale color, with red, orange, brown, yellow, and gray most common. These fungi are fairly tasty and quite nutritious.

DEATH ANGEL: White, gray-white. Mere touch causes a need to make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw (with advantage) or gain the poison status affect. Ingestion requires a like save at disadvantage and a failed save equals death.

CUP FUNGI: Pale yellow, yellow, yellow-orange. The inverted top of this fungus contains an acidic fluid. Any player who jostles or pulls the growth will spill it, receiving 10 (5d4) points of acid damage. Those who stand within a 3′ radius of that individual will suffer 5 (1d10) points of acid damage.

GIANT PUFFBALL: Pale tan, tan, yellowish white. Each globe can direct what equals a double strength gust of wind at any creature who comes closer than 10’. If struck or punctured, these fungi will explode inflicting 15 (3d10) points of thunder damage to all within a 10’ radius.  This may attract the attention of a monster (roll on the areas appropriate random encounter table)

HORSETAIL: Red-brown, red, brown, this fungi sways and swishes menacingly, but it is actually nourishing. It allows for all HD to be recovered (instead of half) on the day it is ingested, and a large bite effectively allows +10 feet of movement speed for 1 minute. It spoils if players attempt to store it, and loses its beneficial properties.

TOADSTOOL: Purple, purplish-brown, brown-green, green, blue green, violet. This type of fungi will turn into a giant toad (as a giant toad but with the plant type instead of beast) if it is molested or even touched roughly.
