D9. The Great Procession of Mortality

There were too many rooms in this dungeon that were essentially “break down door and kill the orc”.  Mixed it up by changing some of the room encounters.  Here one. My PCs visited the room twice, so Shizu was added the second time. Great fight and puzzle.

D9. The Great Procession of Mortality

This is the mind trap tactical encounter from Dungeon 160, replace the monsters with 3 common oni (ogre-magi) and an fire amrita fiend (as common oni  but does fire damage on attacks and is vulnerable to fire. If killed with fire it explodes in fireball (as the spell) on death).

All oni gain the Drag Around Action:

Drag Around (standard; recharge 5 6 ) Weapon Requires barbed whip; reach 10 feet; +12 vs. AC; 2d8 + 5 damage (or 2d8 + 7 damage while bloodied) and the target slides 3 squares; see also pack attack.

Optional if Easy

Shizu joins the fight the first turn an oni dies. She will kick her lighting ball through the portals to attack from a different room.  She knows how the portals work. The oni do not.

Second Visit

  • 1 common oni enters the battle when they use a mirror along with an Amrita Fiend – Lightning.
  • Shizu will also kick balls via the portals from the last room.
  • One of the common oni’s has the following additional trait:
    • Copper Breath (1/day). The oni spews a column of molten copper in a 10-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 38 (11d6) fire and bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Treasure

Each defeated oni leaves behind a platinum handled naginata (glaive) (1k sen).
